Cemeteries can be a wonderful resource when researching for a particular ancestor and as researchers, we often find it's the only way to locate a date of birth or death.
While tombstones can give us dates, they will often tell us a bit more about a particular person and their life. Often tombstones in Louisiana will have where exactly they were born. Place names such Alsace-Lorriane, Killkenny, Ireland and Bliekistal, Germany just to name a few. There are tombstones in Hebrew, French, Russian, each with their own traditional markings of leaves, wheat, ribbons and flowers.
We often go to cemeteries here in Orleans and Jefferson Parish when we can't locate a record on paper or simply want to provide a client with a photo of an ancestors grave. I find it captivating to walk amongst those who came before us and sacrificed so much.
So far, All Things Genealogical has taken more than 4,000 pictures of individual tombstones from various cemeteries here in the greataer New Orleans area.
